What Type of Laser can Cut Wood?

At present, the cutting of wood is mostly performed by traditional saw blade cutting, but it will produce a lot of pollution such as sawdust and noise. Cutting wood with a laser can not only reduce noise, but also reduce the generation of sawdust particles and reduce harm to the human body. The quality of laser-cut wood is also better than that of traditional methods. The cut surface is rough, torn, or fluffy wood grain on the cutting surface is not obvious, but it is covered with a thin carbonized layer.

Laser cutting wood principle

There are two different basic ways of laser cutting wood: instant gasification and burning. The method of laser cutting wood depends on the power density absorbed by the wood during laser cutting. Instant gasification is an ideal method for cutting wood. Wood is gasified to form a slit under the irradiation of a focused laser beam. The characteristics of gasification cutting are: fast cutting speed, heat can not be transmitted to the uncut substrate, no carbonization in section, only slight dullness and glaze. The cutting of the combustion method is mainly due to the lower power density of the beam, which is characterized by a slower cutting speed, a wider slit, a large cutting thickness, and smoke and scorch during the cutting. The combustion method consumes more energy to cut a unit of material than the gasification method, and the cutting edge has carbonization. However, in the actual process of cutting wood, gasification is accompanied by combustion at the same time. This is because although the gasification method has the advantage of high efficiency, it requires a higher power density to achieve it. In the actual laser irradiation process, due to the influence of laser output power and beam mode, the beam power density in some areas on the surface illuminated by the material is lower than the power density required for gasification, so a small amount of combustion occurs. In addition, laser cutting wood also requires an auxiliary airflow coaxial with the beam, which is generally a low-pressure inert gas or air.
