Fiber lasers are essential for many differ-ent production and manufacturing pro-cesses in the e-mobility industry, espe-cially for the manufacture of the electric powertrain that includes the battery and e-motor. The battery production can be divided into the battery cell, the battery module, and the battery pack assembly. Many of the required production pro-cesses, e.g. welding, cutting, marking, ablation etc., are performed with fiber lasers operating at laser powers ranging from several W to several KW.Welding and cutting are the most widely used laser processes in the man-ufacturing of e-vehicles, such as lithi-um-ion batteries. The aluminum and copper foils of the battery cell must be cut and separated. Fiber lasers meet the requirements for the appli-cation:high process velocity,burr free,no tabs,no melt attachments on cut,and no HAZ.

The advantages of the fiber laser remote cutting process are attributable to the high beam quality and high pulse repeti-tion rate available from the pulsed fiber lasers. The nanosecond pulsed fiber lasers are ideal for achieving the requirements for this application as well as for marking and surface treat-ment applications like QR-code mark-ing or hairpin ablation.Fiber lasers fulfill the requirements of several welding processes throughout the electric vehicle production process chain. Welding of the battery pole, the power electronics, the cell seal and bat-tery packs are just a few of the welding applications in the field of e-mobility that are performed with fiber lasers.
