A Beginner's Guide To Laser Stage Lighting

Did you know that laser will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2020? Nowadays, laser lights are more popular than ever in stage performances all over the world. This is nothing new. The laser show started in the 1970s. But now, their technical level is greatly improved, they are safer and cheaper to run, and laser projectors for beginners are cheaper than ever. In this beginner's guide to laser stage lighting, we will teach you all the knowledge you need about modern laser stage lighting, and show you the best choice to buy the first laser stage lighting products that will really improve your stage The experience of the event audience.

Basic knowledge of laser stage lighting: what is a laser?

In 1960, Theodore H. Maiman (Theodore H. Maiman) invented the first laser in the United States. The word laser comes from the acronym, which means "stimulated radiation amplified light." Unlike other forms of light, a laser is a very thin focused beam, usually only one color. The laser will not disperse when passing through the air space. This is the characteristic that makes the laser clear and clear in the air. This seems too strange, especially when viewed in a dark or foggy room.

How does the laser work?

Basically, the working principle of a laser is to emit a very small beam through some mirrors, and then shoot out from the front of the laser projector. In particular, stage-lighting laser projectors usually have mirrors that allow complex movements, which in turn will produce surprising laser shapes in the air (if haze or fog is used) and on the surface where the laser is aimed. But the stage laser operator must ensure that the laser is always aimed at the target audience and can stand at least 3 meters above the Andy surface to ensure safety. This is because lasers can damage eyesight and also damage camera equipment.

What is a laser projector?

A laser projector is a device that projects a constantly changing laser beam onto a screen, which in turn can create moving images that look great in entertainment activities. They consist of a housing containing a laser, mirror, galvanometer scanner, and other optical components. In higher-end laser projectors, the laser projector can include one laser light source for monochromatic projection, or three light sources for RGB (red, green, and blue) full-color.

Are there laser regulations need to follow?

As early as the early days of laser stage lighting in the 1970s, an operator or safety watch (known in the industry as a "laser warlock") was needed to supervise that the laser was not overheated or caught fire. The laser projector at that time was a huge box, emitting a lot of heat. Fortunately, in today's world-lasers are much safer. Small activities with 3R lasers are usually for safety reasons and do not require laser experts to monitor laser shows. In other words, we need to follow some laser usage regulations. For entry-level stage lighting lasers, there are usually two types of laser projectors-Class 3R and Class 3B.

3R stage lighting laser

The laser power of 3R classification is low, and the power in the visible light region is less than 5mW. However, the "scattering" effect used by some 3R laser projectors is sometimes greater than 5mW power-but due to the scattering of light on larger surfaces, some of these projectors can still be classified as 3R.

3B stage lighting laser

The 3B class laser is allowed to exceed 5mW of power, so this requires the use of changes known in the industry. However, if you live in the United States, it is actually very easy to do with a large laser projector. Think of it as a kind of "driver's license" to operate the most impressive (and expensive) laser stage lighting projector. 3R lasers usually do not travel as far away or look vivid as 3B laser projectors, but they are suitable for smaller places and can save a lot of money than buying more expensive 3B projectors. If a 3R laser projector uses a scattering effect to maximize the power it can use, it sometimes loses the vitality of a 3B rated projector. Please note: Although 3R stage lighting lasers are non-biased, they can still hurt people’s eyes if they are used irresponsibly and the line of sight is at least 3m above the audience’s ground. Please be careful when using any type of stage lighting laser. Take the difference and use a high power 3B laser
